Carotid ultrasound uses sound waves to produce pictures of the carotid arteries in the neck which carry blood from the heart to the brain. The carotid arteries in the neck are a common source of small clots, especially if there is a narrowing of the blood vessel due to atherosclerosis, known as a carotid artery stenosis.
